NEPAL - A Land of Incredible Diversity
River Rafting

White Magic action!

One of the charms of Nepal is that it is still largely without roads. Access to its interior is by foot trails that are centuries old trade routes between Tibet and Nepal. More recently, river rafting has also enabled us to explore deeper into this fascinating land where life seems to have been untouched by time.

Nepal possesses some of the premier stretches of white water anywhere in the world. Fast flowing mountain rivers give you the high of riding rapids, as well as the calm of sitting back and enjoying the ride in calmer parts of the river. One of the most exciting sports on offer in Nepal, rafting is also one of the best ways to get off the beaten track and enjoy virgin countryside and remote riverside villages. Trips range from one to several days, and include camping-style dining and accommodations each night on the river bank.

There are many different rivers now open for rafting, each with its own level of difficulty and attractions. The Trisuli River is the ideal choice for a short trip-easily accessible from both Kathmandu and Pokhara, it offers both calm stretches and exciting rapids. The Bhote Kosi and Kali Gandaki are better for mid-length trips by more experienced rafters-both the scenery and the rapids will take your breath away! For those wanting a longer trip into remote territory, the Sun Kosi and Karnali have it all. Whatever your pleasure, we can arrange the perfect rafting trip for you.

River courses are graded from 1 to 6 in the International Scale with Class 1 being the easiest, and Class 6 the toughest. Anyone physically fit, and even without any prior river running experience, can safely venture into rivers running from Class 1 to 3. However, Classes 4 and 5 are recommended only to confident and strong swimmers with prior rafting experience. Class 6, the ultimate, is for dare-devils: extremely difficult and at times, impossible.

Some Popular Rafting Trips

Bhote Koshi river scene

Trishuli River
On account of its easy access from both Kathmandu and Pokhara, the Trishuli River has become the most popular river-running course. Graded at Classes 2 to 3, it is safe for beginners, and at the same time it offers plenty of big and bouncy rapids for an exciting run. The best times recommended are from October till December, and from March till May.

Lower Karnali
This is a beautiful river for rafting on account of both its natural beauty and its remoteness. Because it is so remote, it can be reached only after a two-day trek to the river from Surkhet, which itself takes a day to reach by road and around an hour and a half by air from Kathmandu. For those who have want combine a short trek with rafting, this offers the best possibility. This trip is graded Class 4 to 5 and is best taken in November/December or March/April.

Tamur
This river has been called one of the best in the world on account of the number of rapids - 130 - one encounters on a relatively short run of 6 days. The river is also good for the "wildness" of the rafting route. There are two ways of approaching the river: either by flying to Taplejung airstrip, just two hours away from the starting point, or by driving up to Basantapur from Kathmandu (around 18 hours) and then taking a two-day trek to where the trip begins. Tamur has been graded Class 4 to 5 and the recommended months are October through December and February through April.

Sun Koshi
A trip down the Sun Kosi is probably Nepal's rafting equivalent of the Everest trek. Everything is right: no town or roads for close to ten days, fantastic scenery, huge rapids and, best of all, relatively warm water - so uncharacteristic of Himalayan rivers. The approach is also close to Kathmandu and the two?hour drive leads through beautiful countryside. The river is graded Class 4 to 5 and is best tried during October through December and March through May.

Arun
For those with time constraints that exclude the classic Sun Koshi, this is a short but worthwhile substitute. As you have to fly in to reach the river, the magnificent view of the mountains is an added bonus. Graded at Class 4, the best season to tackle this river is November through April.

Upper Kali Gandaki
This river has become popular in recent years, mainly due to the reason that access to it has been simplified with the construction of a highway. Another reason for its popularity is that it is a perfect way to end the famous Annapurna circuit trek after which one can either proceed to Pokhara or carry on to Chitwan National Park. Its charm lies in its running through unspoiled terrain where wildlife can be seen aplenty. It is of particular interest to bird watchers as well. The trip itself is exciting, graded as it is at Class 4. The best season to run this river is October to December and March/April.

SUNKOSI River Rafting
13 days - including 3 nights in Kathmandu
The Sunkosi is one of the three main tributaries of the Saptakosi system. The Sunkosi rises near Shisa Pangma in Tibet and runs south then eastwards through Nepal. The Sunkosi forms the watershed for most of eastern Nepal; it gathers strength from its many tributaries including the Dudh Kosi (which flows off Everest), and produces one of the best runs on Grade 4 water in the Northern Hemisphere.

The combination of beautiful scenery, a unique culture and exciting whitewater with some sun thrown in are the essential ingredients of a magical two week trip in Nepal.

From the put-in Dolalghat to the take-out at Chattra, you will travel 272 km (170 miles) on the river as it descends through remote mountainous countryside. There are no towns or roads on the Sunkosi, hence the raft will be carrying all the supplies and equipment. The rapids on the first two days allow both kayakers and rafters to warm up sufficiently before they reach for the harder rapids below. Kayakers should be able to roll confidently and preferably have some experience of bigger water. It is possible to portage all of the harder rapids if you don't like the look of the route down.

Optional: As for those having extra days in Kathmandu, the Sunkosi rafting can be preceded by a six days marvelous trekking through pines, rhododendrons and terraced fields to Kalinchok at 10,000'. Towards the end of the trek, they can then join the rafters at Dolalghat to begin the raft trip.

TAMUR
16 days - Trek & Raft combination
with 3 days in Kathmandu
Tamur like Sunkosi is one of the main tributaries of the Saptakosi system, however flowing from the far north-eastern border - from the glaciers of the third highest mountain, Kanchanjunga. It is a magnificent whitewater trip one of the best in the world, with countless rapids of scale 3 and 4 in the 120 km stretch which is done in 7 river days. Valley sides are well wooded, there are good beaches for camping and plentiful signs of wildlife. The river has much more of a feeling of being a wilderness rafting trip than many of the other more popular rafting rivers.

The 4 days walk-in to the put-in of the Tamur river at Dobhan with all the raft gear is just beautiful and unspoiled. The trek takes you along a very scenic ridgeline at 3,000m through beautiful wood of rhododendron and conifer trees with magnificent views of Jannu, Makalu and Everest as the stalwarts in the region.

KARNALI EXPEDITION
15 days - including 4 days in Kathmandu
The Karnali is the longest and the largest river of Nepal. It rises high in Tibet near the holy Mt. Kailash and in 350 miles descends from snowfield at an altitude of some 17,000' through the Himalayas in a series of spectacular gorges down to the heat and dust of the terai. These factors make it one of the finest stretches of whitewater rafting in the world - in broad terms it is twice as steep, twice as big as such well known rivers as Grand Canyon of the Colorado, U.S.A. The area that it flows through is wild and unpopulated with some of the most pristine jungle scenery in Nepal with abundant wildlife.

Our trip begins by flying in to Nepalgunj and driving to Suikhet followed by two days of walk with the entire raft and camping gear to the put-in at Sauli. End of the raft trip in Chisopani after 7 river days.
