LADAKH - "Land of the Lamas"
Ladakh - occupies the western end of the Tibetan plateau and is often
referred to as 'Little Tibet Indeed, its Buddhist people are of Tibetan origin
and many still wear the traditional robes, stove pipe hats and curious felt
boots with turned-up toes.
After the demise of the first Tibetan empire, Tibet was divided among three
brothers in 1020. One of them moved to Ladakh and founded the first royal
dynasty there. When Tibetan Buddhism in the eastern neighboring kingdom of Guge
experienced a new high point, this rejuvenation affected Ladakh. Its temple
monasteries and the manner in which religion sharply pervaded the people's way
of life gave clear evidence of this. In many cases, old shrines of the earlier
Bon religion were transformed into Buddhist monasteries.

Markha Valley Trek : Duration 15 nights / 16 days
[Cost Details]
The Markha Valley epitomises the best of this scenery. It has giant rock
pinnacles, beetling cliffs, narrow defiles, prayer-flagged passes. During the
trek we pass ruins of many forts and castles that were built in some very
unlikely places. Its is a fairly long trek, crossing a pass of over 17,
000ft/f.182m with views of Mt. Kang Yatse, 21, 500ft/6,553m. The scenery is
stark and dramatic - deep gorges, alluvial fans, contorted strata, large
Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, flat-topped mud- brick house in oasis-like
villages. The Kyongmaru pass (5030 m) affords great views south to the Zanskar
Range and Ladakh range to the north. We also experience the sights and sounds
of Delhi, Capital city of India and visit the World famous Taj Mahal.
Note: A minimum of 2 nights acclimatization is a necessity at Leh
because it involves trekking at High elevations.

Leh
Morning half visit Phyang and Spituk monasteries by jeep.
Phyang - it was founded in the 16th century by king Tashi
Namgyal, for a Lama he had invited to establish the Digungpa order (branch of
the Kagyupa order). A prayer pole marks the place from which one can see the
monastery and signifies that, from this point on, criminals escape punishment.
Spituk - is the oldest Delgupta monastery in the Indus valley,
dating from 15th Century. It is interesting to note that the Delgupta monks
created the precedent of building monasteries on hilltops, rather than on
valley floors. This follows the Tibetan notion that the higher the monastery
sites, the closer it is to the Gods. There was certainly no political
significance attached to its strategic sting at the time. Nowadays Spituk
administers Shanker monastery in Leh and also the Stokh village monastery.

Fly Leh - Delhi, transfer to Agra
Transfer to Leh airport for another breathtaking mountain flight back to Delhi.
Arrive in Delhi and drive to Agra (5hrs), to visit the magnificent Taj Mahal,
set within the 'paradise gardens'.
The Tāj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra on the western bank of the
Yamuna river 204 kilometers south of Delhi, the capital of India. The Mughal
Emperor Shāh Jahān commissioned it as a mausoleum for his favourite
wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction began in 1632 and was completed in 1648. Some
dispute surrounds the question of who designed the Taj; it is clear a team of
designers and craftsmen were responsible for the design, with Ustad Isa
considered the most likely candidate as the principal designer.
The Taj Mahal (sometimes called "the Taj") is generally considered the finest
example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Persian and
Indian. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar part of the
monument, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures. It was
listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 when it was described as a
"universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage".
