time Freak Street, one is suddenly in the midst of Kathmandu's famed medieval
architecture. The major tourist attractions on this tour includes a visit to
the Hanuman Dhoka (Hanuman gate) which takes its name from the Monkey
God, Hanuman from the epic, Ramayana The palace of the Malla Kings located in
the Hanuman Dhoka is of the 14th Century and it is still retained as a
ceremonial palace of the present Shah dynasty. Important traditional Royal

Hanuman Dhoka Palace. Near the Hanuman Dhoka is the house of the Living Goddess
Kumari - Kumari Bahal. Two painted stone Lions stand guard at the
entrance. Visitors may enter the courtyard to see the Living Goddess but are
forbidden to take photographs.
Also visit "Kasthamandap", a temple built from the wood of a single
tree from Where Kathmandu city derived its name.
Continue drive to Swayambhunath Stupa - one of the protected monument
sites of the Kathmandu Valley. It is situated on the top of the hill lying 4
kilometers west of Kathmandu. More than 2,500 years old, this ancient landmark
is connected to the visit of Manjushree who created Kathmandu - a lake than -
by draining its waters. The sage saw a celestial lotus in bloom on the top of
this hill and sacrificed it. It is an important pilgrimage center as well as
the center of art, architecture, religion and culture of Mahayana Buddhism.
The Stupa of Swayambhu is a hemispherical mound of compacted earth, and is
built to specific rules, and is replete with symbols. The mound represents the
four elements of earth, fire, wind and water. The 13 gilded rings of the spire
symbolize the 13 steps of the ladder leading to Nirvana, the final
salvation. The shrine is bedecked in colorful prayer flags. The pilgrim's
progress to Swayambhunath's holy premises is actually through a sylvan path of
365 steps. The entrance is graced by a huge Vajra (Symbol of thunder
bolt). Statues of Buddha adorn the four corners of the Stupa. Statues of
goddess Ganga and Jamuna guard the eternal flame behind it. There is a Tibetan
gompa (monastery) and innumerable chaityas (small stupas). The balcony of
Swayambhunath is ideal for viewing the entire valley spread out below.
There are five images of Panchadhyani Buddha around the main Stupa of the
Swayambhu. They are Achhyobhya in east, Ratna Sambhava in
south, Amitabh in the west, Amoghasiddhi in the north and Vairochana
in the south-east just by the side of Achhyobhya. Two Sikhara temples known as,
Pratappur and Anantpur are standing on either side of the main stupa. To the
right of this temple is a monastery called Swayambhu Vahi. It is one of the
oldest monasteries of the Swayambhu area. On the west of the main stupa is the
monastery called Devadharma Gumba. Similarly there is a temple of Vayapura in
southwest corner along with chaitya known as Mangal Vahudwara chaitya near by.
It is a unique style of Chaitya found in the Kathmandu Valley.

southeast of Kathmandu. The city is full of Hindu temples and Buddhist
monuments. The major tourist attractions of Patan are the Durbar Square

Sightseeing tour of Bhaktapur city or the "city
of devotees"
Drive to Bhaktapur city or the "city of devotees" situated
at an altitude of 1,401 m, 12 kilometers east of Kathmandu. It is shaped like a
conch shell and covers an area of 4 square miles. It was the setting for the
major Hollywood production "The Little Buddha". Pottery and weavings are its
traditional industries. Here one visits the Durbar Square which contains
innumerable temples and other architectural showpieces like Lion Gate, the
statue of Bhupatindra Malla, the Picture Galley, Golden Gate, Palace of 55
windows, Bastille temple and the Bell of barking dogs, etc. The statue
of Bhupatindra Malla in the act of worship is placed on a column facing the
palace. Of the many statues available in Nepal, this is considered to be the
most magnificent.
Also visit The National Art Gallery which contains ancient and
medieval paintings belonging to Hindu and Buddhist school depicting Tantrics of
various period and descriptions. The Golden Gate is the entrance to the main
counter of the Palace of 55 windows. Built by King Ranjit Malla, the gate is
one of the most beautiful and richly carved specimens of its kind in the entire
world. This gate is embellished with deities and monsters of marvelous
intricacy. The Palace of 55 Windows was built in the 17th century by King
Bhupatindra Malla and among the brick walls with their gracious settings and
sculptural design, is a balcony of 55 windows. This balcony is the masterpiece
of woodcarving.
Descend to the lower compound to the Natyapola Temple which stands on
a five-terraced platform. This five storey pagoda was built in 1702 AD by King
Bhupatindra Malla. On each of the terraces squat a pair of figures; two famous
wrestlers, two elephants, two lions, two griffins and Baghiani and Singini the
tiger and the lion goddesses. This is one of the tallest pagodas and is famous
for its massive structure and subtle workmanship.
PM : Sightseeing tour of Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhnath Stupa
The word 'Pashupatinath' literally means 'lord of the
animals' and Shiva is capable of destroying all the evil forces with his
'trident' or the 'third eye'. Whether for seeking material gains or desperately
seeking release from the cycle of mortal existence, Lord Pashupatinath's temple
is a must on the itinerary of every Hindu visiting Kathmandu for work or on
holiday, and many times only for paying obeisance to the Shiva's lingam.
Only Hindus can go for darshans and no leather goods are allowed inside the
pristine precincts. This, however, does not limit the diversity of devotees.
The temple is one of the most ancient places of worship, and the worshippers
could be Newar nuns, Tibetan monks, Brahmin priests, turbaned Sikhs or lay
Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus.
The Pashupatinath Temple is the holiest Hindu pilgrimage destination
in Nepal. There are linga images of Shiva along with statues, shrines and
temples dedicated to other deities in the complex. The old temple and the
original lingas were destroyed by the Islam invasion in the middle of the 14th
century, and a new modern Shiva Linga was donated by a powerful personality of
the time, Jaya Simheran Vardhan. The main god or the linga of Pashupatinath is
carved on a blackish stone, with four faces engraved on the four sides of the
linga. As the array of lamps light up in the evening, an air of serenity blends
into the atmosphere. A separate area has 500-plus lamps placed in a
labyrinthine manner, a complete round of which is supposed to wash away all
sins committed in this and the past seven lives.
A temple dedicated to Shiva existed at this site in AD 879. However, King
Bhupatindra Malla built the present temple in 1679. A gold- plated roof, silver
doors and wood - carvings of the finest quality decorate the pagoda
construction. Guheswari temple represents the female force. It is dedicated to
Satidevi, Shiva's first wife, who gave up her life in the flames of her
father's fire ritual. From here one can see the burning ghats too, with
separate platforms for members of the royal family and ordinary citizens. Puja
ceremonies can be performed at the sanctum sanctorum as well as near the river,
where throwing five rudraksha beads in a small kund is said to bring harmony,
health, peace and wisdom in life. But beware of the high monkey population
there. They may not actually harm the devotee but, yes, they do lunge for the
"Prasad" or any edible item, which attracts their attention.
Continue on to Boudhnath Stupa. This stupa lies about 6 Km to the east
of downtown Kathmandu and a five minutes drive from Pashupatinath Temple.
It is built on a flat surface and is the largest stupa in the valley. It is in
various levels of terraces, and is painted in pastel, and is adorned with
prayer flags. It looms 36 meters high and presents one of the most fascinating
specimens of Stupa design. The design in specific is called 'mandala".
Altogether 108 Buddha images and 147 insets of prayer wheels adorn the base of
the huge circular edifice.
Boudhnath, a World Heritage Site, is also known as Khasti. There are
more than 45 Buddhist monasteries in the Area and also has the largest
community of Tibetans-12, 000 (approx.) in all.
Drive back to hotel.

Fly Kathmandu / Pokhara
Fly Kathmandu / Pokhara (30 minutes).Upon arrival transferred to the Hotel.
PM: Sightseeing tour of Pokhara including the Davids falls, Brindabasini Temple,
Seti Gorge and Mahendra Pul.
First, proceed to David Falls: This falls has been made to be an
outstanding attraction in many brochures and guidebooks. But you are likely to
be disappointed unless you visit there during the rainy season. The water of
Pardi Khola, which drain Lake Phewa, fall underground and disappears at David
Falls. There is an interesting legend associated with this falls (which is
probably true). During the late fifties, a Swiss couple were visiting Pokhara
on their honeymoon trip and happened to take bath in the waters of the fall.
The gates of the dam were opened unexpectedly and the man was washed away and
drowned. It was after the drowned man that the locals named this fall.
Later drive to Bindebasani Temple, the most famous temple of Pokhara and
is situated in the old part of the city. It was constructed by the Rajas of
Kaski before unification of Nepal. It was renovated in 1965. the main deity is
the goddess Durga. There is a major festival during the Dasain in October in
which animals such as goat are sacrificed. After visiting the temple you can
move around the old market surrounding the temple. This is also the starting
point of trek to Sarangkot. There are a number of old buildings but these are
not as old as in Kathmandu valley. These are perhaps a century old. Some old
buildings at Ramkrishna and Bhairab Toles are planned to be preserved in
"monument zone" to be set up in the area. Continue on to Mahendra Pul to
see the Seti Gorge: The deep gorge made by Seti River (which means
'white' in Nepali) along the eastern side of Pokhara city could be as much as
40 meters and has been made a tourist attraction in the city. The gorges are
visible from bridges in the city - the most famous being Mahendra Pool in city
center.
After the sightseeing tour, head for the lake side for a 1 hour serene boat ride
on the famous Phewa Lake: Boating in Phewa Lake is a must and there are
three major boat harbors - Gaurighat in Lakeside (East) before Royal Palace,
Barahighat near Snowland Hotel in Lakeside (West) - near the Barahi Temple in
the middle of the lake and third one near municipal camping ground in Kahare.
It is much nicer to boat during the evening.
Also visit the Barahi Temple: The temple is situated in an island in
Lake Phewa in the touristy area of Lakeside. It is dedicated to the goddess
Barahi and is believed to be at least two centuries old but was renovated
recently. You have ride by a boat to visit this temple.

descent through the small settlements of the Gurung community and arrives at

Khola (river), cross the bridge and a short climb brings us to the settlement
of Chuele. Though a bit early, lunch will be prepared here because there is no
settlement till Tadapani because of the acute shortage of water.
After lunch, climb steadily for about an hour to arrive at an abandoned house
in a clearing. There is a lot of marijuana plants growing wild. From here enter
a dense forest of very tall trees. Because the sunlight cannot penetrate
through the canopy of the forest, the trail is slippery at places. Continue to
climb and after two hours arrive at Tadapani, with a row of tea houses and
lodges on a ridge. We shall stay overnight at this lush green area with trees
and fresh mountain air.

at a small village. Continue to climb steadily amidst chirping birds on
treetops to arrive at Banthanti, located near a river. It is a densely forested
area and chances of seeing the rich flora and fauna is possible although best

(3180 m) which is the highest point of the trek. For better views, we continue
through dense forests for about 20 minutes to arrive at a clearing with a few
tea houses and an open field above the village for lunch.
After lunch, continue through the forest. The trail is a gently undulating one
having reached our highest point. After about 1 ½ hour of trekking through the
rhododendron forests along the ridge line, arrive at a clearing to get views of
the Annapurna South and the Ghorepani village far down below. Descend for 30
minutes to approach the main gate to Ghorepani with a big signboard welcoming
trekkers to this village, which is also the highest campsite on our trek. It is
an interesting walk as we pass through this densely populated village of a
different ethnic community of Magars. We pass through the main village to
arrive at the Lodge for overnight stay.

(10,200 ft) to view a magnificent sunrise over the Annapurna Range. Shortly
afterwards we return back to Ghorepani for breakfast. After breakfast, bid
farewell to the villagers and the trek starts with a descent which gradually
intensifies as we descend steeply to the river. Then there is more descending
through a trail of gurgling streams and forests till our arrival at the Magar
settlement of Ulleri for lunch. This village is located on a steep incline and
has one of the best drainage systems in this part of the region. After lunch,
descend on stone steps through the narrow lanes and then there is a steep knee
wobbling descent on stone steps all the way down to the bridge on the Bhurgundi
Khola which is dreaded by all trekkers.. The descent could take about 2 hours.
The trail becomes more hazardous with the mule train also vying to get in front
(ascending and descending) and sometimes lead to traffic jams. It is advisable
to keep to the wall and let the mule trains to pass as accidents can happen if
one is on the edge and is brushed by these pack animals.
After crossing the bridge, a short climb brings us to Tirkhedhunga. However,
there are better campsites about 30 minutes walk to Hille.
